The basics

What is planning poker?

Planning poker (also known as scrum poker or pointing poker) is a quick, game-like way for agile teams to estimate work. Everyone picks a card for how big a story is, and the cards are revealed at the same time.

Because nobody sees anyone else’s card first, the estimate reflects the whole team, not just the first or loudest person to speak. The real value is the conversation when the cards don’t match.

How a round works

  1. Read the story

The facilitator puts a ticket on the mat and the team asks questions.

  2. Pick a card in secret

Everyone chooses the size they believe in, without seeing anyone else’s.

  3. Reveal together

All cards flip at once, so nobody anchors on the loudest voice.

  4. Talk, then agree

Discuss the highest and lowest cards, re-vote if needed, and lock in an estimate.

Questions, answered

Is Benchmark really free?

Yes. Unlimited rooms, rounds and votes, with no sign-up, no plans and no trial.

Do my teammates need an account?

No. Share the room link, they type a name and take a seat. It works on phones, tablets and laptops.

Can anyone see my card before the reveal?

No. The server keeps every card face-down until the facilitator reveals, so nobody can peek, not even in the browser's developer tools.

Who can reveal the cards?

The facilitator: the person who opened the room. They can hand the role to someone else, or let everyone reveal from the room settings.

Which card decks can we use?

Fibonacci, Modified Fibonacci, T-shirt sizes, Powers of 2, or your own custom cards.

Can we keep a room private?

Yes. The facilitator can require a passcode or lock the room so nobody new can join, and can remove people from the table.

What happens to our data?
